Daesh. A word that strikes fear into our hearts since 1999. In 2014, this armed group tried to create a radical worldwide Islamic caliphate. Daesh invaded Iraqi and Syrian territory to establish a reign of terror there. A global coalition involving Canada was formed in September of that year to weaken Daesh’s economic structure, prevent recruitment of Islamic extremists and restore essential public services to liberated areas.
